The Stone Family

Here, you can learn about different rocks. Each stone in the stone family tells its own story about how they were born, where they come from, and how they ended up here.  

If you look closely among the stones in Mølen and Jomfuland, you’ll find them: Sara Sandstone, Kari Quartzite, Børre Basalt and all the other members of the rock family.

They came with the inland ice and the rivers underneath it, and were dumped in a pile on the seabed in front of the glaciers. Here, they were left when the glacier melted after the last ice age. The glacier was so heavy that it pressed the ground downwards, and as the ice melted the ground started rising. Therefore, this pile of rocks no longer sits on the seabed, but on land.
In this pile, there was also large amounts of sand and clay, but most of this was washed away by the waves.

Each member of the stone family has its unique story to tell about where they’re from and what they’ve experienced. Some of them are used as construction material or for decorations, which they’d also love to tell you about!
