Organization

Goals
Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark aims to:

  • Communicate the importance of geological processes for society.

  • Serve as a center of expertise for the sustainable use of geological heritage.

  • Facilitate access to the region’s geological attractions.

  • Highlight the region’s geological, historical, cultural, and ecological qualities.

  • Use natural and cultural heritage to strengthen local identity and pride27.

Strategy

  • The area has extremely high geological diversity, both nationally and internationally.

  • Several geological sites in the geopark are of European and international top class.

  • The region has relied on geological resources for at least 500 years, especially iron ore and ironworks, which played a key role in Norway’s early industrialization.

  • There is a clear link between geological diversity and societal development (settlement, agriculture, culture, industry).

  • There are clear connections between geological and biological diversity27.

Board of Representatives
The Board of Representatives is the highest authority, consisting of 11 politically elected members-one from each municipality and four from the counties.

Board
The Geopark’s board consists of five members and two deputy members, representing a range of backgrounds.

About the Geopark

The Geopark is limited by the administrative areas of the muncipalities Kragerø, Bamble, Porsgrunn, Skien, Siljan, Nome and Larvik. Geologically the area may be described as "where the old Scandinavian geology meets the younger geology of continental Europe".
