Rhomb porphyry

Rhomb porphyry

Ragna Rhomb Porphyry is a fine lady who is quite unique. She is a lava that has only been found in three places in the world!

Yes, Lars Larvikite and I are related-can you see that we look a bit alike? I was also once molten deep down, together with Lars.

But I was a bit more restless; I wanted to go up and see a bit of the world. Up and forward, that’s me. All the way to the top, flowing out over the earth’s surface. I know that those openings in the earth’s crust that I flowed out of are called volcanoes, so I am a volcanic rock.

It was much colder up here on the earth than deep down, so I solidified quite quickly. Some parts of me, the light spots, had already solidified a bit earlier, on the way up from the melt. The light minerals had a bit more time to become crystals, so that’s why I am full of such white rhomb shapes, while the rest of me is much finer-grained.

When Lars says he is rare, I really am too. Not exactly around here, but in the whole world you can only find me in a very few places. If you find me on the beach in Denmark or in Germany, you can be sure that I have come from somewhere near the Geopark! Taken a trip with the ice, you could say.

About the Geopark

The Geopark is limited by the administrative areas of the muncipalities Kragerø, Bamble, Porsgrunn, Skien, Siljan, Nome and Larvik. Geologically the area may be described as "where the old Scandinavian geology meets the younger geology of continental Europe".
