Granite

Geir Granite has been deep down in the earth and is often used for building things.

Brr, it’s so cold here! It’s a bit better now that it’s summer and there’s green grass, but where I come from, now that’s what you call heat! Not that it was all cool down there either, because it was so hot that rocks like me melted. I’m talking about a place far down inside the earth. Did you know that the temperature increases the deeper you go into the earth’s crust?

So there I was, as molten rock, but then something started pushing from below. The melt began to move upwards towards the earth’s crust, and everything became more comfortable! I started to solidify-you can see this in the beautiful white, reddish-orange, and dark pieces I’m made of. These are different minerals that formed as I cooled. Pretty, isn’t it?

I’m not that unusual; you can find many like me in Norway. But I come from Drammen, where you can see how my siblings have been blasted out of the mountain to become building stone and gravel. It’s not just you who thinks I look nice, you know!
