Gabbro

Gabbro

Gunnulf Gabbro is a plutonic (intrusive) rock, which means he was once molten deep underground and has solidified into stone. He is made up mostly of dark minerals, with some light ones as well.

Do you think I look stylish? Dark and impressive, right? I can also tell you how dark it is deep inside the Earth. And hot. Because that’s where I come from-almost from the Earth’s interior. I’m also one of those rock types that comes from a melt.

I am very closely related to Børre Basalt, but he was much more restless than I am. And a bit daring, rushing up and out of a volcano. I took things more slowly. On Earth, the only constant is change. Over time, it got cooler down in my melt. I became really cold, and then I solidified into this beautiful gabbro.

We gabbros are actually a large family of rocks that look quite similar to each other. You can find us in many places in Norway, both in the oldest bedrock in Kragerø and Bamble, or up in the high mountains. In Kragerø, I have a very popular brother who is even darker than I am. He’s a real tough guy, so durable that he’s mixed into asphalt used for roads. If you take the ferry to Kragerø, you can look up at the quarry where my brother is blasted out of the mountain. It’s nice to be popular too!
