Amphibolite

Amphibolite

Anders Amphibolite was once a gabbro or basalt, but was transformed after a trip down into the depths, where he was heated, squeezed, and pressed.

Some people claim I look a bit boring. If only they knew! Not everyone has experienced as much as I have! Do you see the red spots on my back? Those are garnets; did you know you can find lots of garnets in the rocks around Bamble and Kragerø?

A long time ago, I was something quite different-gabbro or basalt, people say. It’s all the same to me; I just remember it got hot. And I became myself, deep down in the Earth’s crust. Geologists, those who know a lot about rocks, like me because my garnets can supposedly tell them how hot it really was. Why they want to know that, I don’t understand-they should have been there themselves and felt it! But I’ve heard it was probably more than 500 degrees.

Today, you’ll find many like me on the islands around here. So I haven’t traveled very far with the ice. But I enjoy being where I am now-it’s easy to understand what you visitors are talking about, and I like that, being as curious as I am! At my age, I’m allowed to be, and it’s fun when you want to hear a bit of my story too.
