Kjærra Fossepark

From Lava and Ice to Fertile Valle

Lågendalen is the remnant of a mighty fjord. When the ice retreated, the fjord flooded over the depressed land, reaching all the way up to Skollenborg. The highest water level was 170–180 meters above sea level in Lardal, known as the marine limit. This boundary closely matches the upper level for agricultural land. Here, we find high-quality arable soil, and the Lågendalen valley is among the country's foremost agricultural areas.

The Kjærra Fossepark Foundation has developed and manages the area as it is today. Kjærrafossen is perhaps best known for its excellent salmon fishing, and the historic fishing methods are well documented. In the summer season, if the water level allows, a weekly trap fishing event is held where the public can participate, and the salmon is raffled among the visitors. The large fly sculpture along the main road is a well-known landmark for Kjærra Fossepark
