UNESCO SITE DESIGNATIONS
UNESCO, som er FNs organisasjon for utdanning, vitenskap og kultur, utnevner områder med spesiell og verdifull natur- og/eller kulturarv, over hele verden. Aller først, i 1971, ble det vedtatt å etablere Biosfæreområder (Man and biosphere reserves). Så fulgte Verdensarvlista (World Heritage List) i 1972. Det tok mange år før den geologiske delen av naturarven oppnådde å få samme type betegnelse, det skjedde i 2015 gjennom etableringen av UNESCO Global Geoparks.
